Louis Cartier, an advocate of eighteethcentury art, rose to prominence with the Garland style of the early twentieth century. He also encouraged his designers to explore a more modern aesthetic form.
The sketches that emerged from the studios on Rue de la Paix in 1904 were pioneering ventures into the abstract style. Shortly before the First World War, Cartier was using onyx to create an illusion of shadow and depth and in doing so, gave this jewellry a three-dimensional aspect. This pieceis dominated by gentle, graceful lines. Yellow gold took the place of white metals as the newe favorite for jewelery. New Naturalist style was introduced into toussaint, with flowers, animals and plants becoming a part of the Cartier fantasy.
